The 2024 Canadian Championship draw is complete: with the preliminary matchups now decided, we know how the tournament will take shape when it kicks off in two months’ time.

Here’s a recap on the format, which sees fourteen clubs involved. Last year’s winner and runner-up get byes to the quarter final, while the other twelve clubs will duke it out in the single match preliminary round between April 23 and May 1.

With the closed-door draw completed, here’s what that preliminary round looks like:

We’ll see a Vancouver Isle derby between Pacific and League1 BC’s Victoria Highlanders, a 905 Derby between Forge and York United, and some all-CPL clashes in Cavalry vs Vancouver FC and Atletico Ottawa vs Valour.

League1 Ontario champions Simcoe County Rovers will have it all to away to Toronto FC, while the Halifax Wanderers will host League1 Quebec’s CS St-Laurent.

The winners of those matches will progress to the quarter-finals, where reigning cup champions Vancouver Whitecaps await the victor of Cavalry and Vancouver, and runners-up CF Montreal will face either Forge or York United – two CPL teams who have both faced the club in previous iterations of the tournament.

The quarter-finals will switch to a home-and-away format with all matches taking place throughout the month of May. The four clubs left after that will continue to the two-legged semi-final, with the first leg taking place between July 9-10 and the second taking place some time later on August 27-28.

After the quarter-finals are wrapped, a secondary draw will determine the semi-final matches and host club for the final to eliminate regionalization for the semi-final and final stage of the tournament – a move that we think is quite a nice update.

The Telus 2024 Canadian Championship Final will then take place in a single match format on September 24 or 25.
