Toronto FC took to Yankee Stadium in their fourth matchday of the 2024 MLS campaign. The Reds headed into the matchup with a 2-0-1 record after defeating Charlotte in their home opener last Saturday, but Coach Herdman would ultimately fall short in the Bronx, losing 2-1 to the 2015 MLS expansion club New York City FC.

The Reds started the first half on a positive note as Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty scored his first MLS goal in the early minutes of the first half to give Toronto the early lead.

However, Marshall’s goal would not be enough for the Reds to grab the three points in New York, as the home side would then tie things up in the first half. Santiago Rodriguez’s equalizing goal was the first goal Toronto has conceded this season.

Goalkeeper Luka Gavran managed to put in a number of stops preventing the home side from taking a 2-1 lead in the first 45.

The Reds’ defensive efforts would fall short as NYFC would then proceed to snatch the three points from the undefeated side in the 64th minute as Kevin O’Toole would score his first MLS goal, winning it for New York City FC.

Coach Herdman was missing an injured captain Jonathan Osorio, goalkeeper Sean Johnson, defenders Richie Laryea, Nicksoen Gomis, and Raul Petretta, and midfielder Brandon Servania.

2024 MLS Super Draft top pick Tyrese Spicer would follow pursuit of Matty Longstaff’s debut in the home opener, as the top pick would make his debut for Toronto in the 75th minute.

Toronto will host Atlanta United next Saturday and Coach Herdman will without a doubt seek out a win in front of home crowd as the climb from a terrible 2023 season continues.
