Last night saw Toronto FC continue to impress and turn heads as they defeat New England at Gillette Stadium 1-0, earning the club its first away victory since the 2-0 win against Charlotte FC at the Bank of America stadium on August 27, 2022.

With the 1-0 result, Coach Herdman has earned his first victory since taking over as head coach of Toronto FC. For the first time in history, Toronto FC also recorded consecutive clean sheets to begin an MLS campaign, while keeper Sean Johnson put up a total of six saves to equal his previous club-high recorded saves which he had set last Sunday against FC Cincinnati.

The keeper’s performance was highlighted by a showstopping save in the final minutes of extra time, saving Toronto FC from conceding and keeping the win in the bag at Gillette Stadium.

On the front line, the hero of the day was none other then Italian DP Lorenzo Insigne, who was in doubt of getting minutes in this fixture. Herdman’s decision to start the attacker would pay off in the 27th minute of the first half after Insigne scored a cheeky chip that would ultimately prove to be a match-winner. Lorenzo’s sole goal and performance on the night would also earn him man of the match honours.

Offseason signing defender Nicksoen Gomis also started and made his debut for Toronto FC as he replaced Laryea from the starting eleven, with Laryea being described by coach Herdman to be in a ‘fatigue state’.

Toronto FC still have a lot to bounce back from after the 2023 season, yet a win away from home and a scoreless draw in last weeks matchup against FC Cincinnati is a important step in the right direction to start the club’s MLS campaign.

“This is the first win, the first step of many many more,” said Captain Jonathan Osorio after the final whistle was blown in a huddle with his teammates.

The positivity is definitely present at Toronto FC, who will look to carry it into next weekends home opener on Saturday against Charlotte FC.
