For Matchday 20 of the 2024 MLS campaign, Toronto FC welcomed Chicago Fire to BMO Field in hopes of getting back to winning ways after recording a pair of road draws against the likes of Philadelphia Union and D.C. United.

Head coach John Herdman headed into this matchup with a couple of missing players, and the number of absentees on the matchday roster showed as the Reds lost 4-1 on the night.

The first half started with the Reds conceding first despite some goalkeeping within the sticks for Luka Gavran as he put in a number of saves within the first 20 minutes of playing time.

Yet the visitors Chicago Fire would strike first in the 42nd minute of play, with Maren Haile-Selassie getting a touch of the ball in the box he headed away the first goal of the night.

The Reds would respond back quickly with Lorenzo Insigne striking a powerful shot that powered through the mitts of goalkeeper Chris Brady to make things all square before the first half whistle was blown. The goal was originally called back, but after video review the goal was given.

The second half with kick-off with the visitors taking the 2-1 lead after a ball giveaway near the box in the 57th minute goal scored by Hugo Cuypers.

Just three minutes after taking the 2-1 lead the guests would another making it 3-1 goal scored from a strike outside of the box by defender Mauricio Pineda.

Allan Arigoni would seal the goals away for the Chicago Fire scoring the fourth goal of the night for the visitors putting it in the far post right past Luka Gavran.

“Disappointing is an understatement,” said John Herdman after the 4-1 loss. “We were too soft. We’ve gotta be harder to beat at home”.

“I’m emotional about this one, I’ve never been this disappointed in the thirty years of my coaching career.”

Tonight’s loss leaves Toronto FC winless in their last four fixtures which dates back to May 25, where they lost 4-3 to FC Cincinnati at home this also leaves the club with a 7-7-4 record in all league games thus far. The next game will be at home as well, where they will go up against Nashville FC for the second time this season on Wednesday night.
