Two Second Half Goals See Reds Defeated At BMO Field

In what was going to be a hard match for Toronto at home at BMO Field as the regular season slowly nears to its end with only a couple games remaining.

The Reds hosted the defending MLS Champions Columbus Crew at BMO Field for their second meeting this 2024 MLS campaign.

The first half looked promising for both sides with valiant efforts from both sides of the field for both teams but in the end the first 45 minutes of play ended with no goals as both teams shared possession equally.

In the second half of play the Crew came out and displayed their current position of being listed as best defence in the MLS and with a second-best attack in the Eastern Conference.

The Crew first opened their scoring in the 51st minute of the second half as Cucho Hernández would find the ball placed perfectly on line right outside the box and would strike it past keeper Sean Johnson to give his side the 1-0 lead.

The defending champions goal would later come in the 71st minute after a scramble in the box for the ball from both sides Marcelo Herrera would find the final tap in and put away his first goal for Columbus giving his side the 2-0 win over the Reds and sealing the sweep in the regular season series.

Toronto was without a number of defensemen as Nicksoen Gomis, Henry Wingo, Kevin Long, and also forward Charlie Sharp were all out on injuries.

The Reds still remain two points below the seventh place Charlotte after losing to the Crew, behind the Reds is Philadelphia Union who currently hold the final wild-card playoff match position with three points behind Toronto FC with a game in hand as well.

With only a mere remaining games left the pressure is on for the Reds as a number of teams behind them are within a points reach and many of them have a game in hand meaning Toronto’s next few games are even more crucial.

Toronto FC’s next game will see them visiting Colorado on Saturday before they have to play Vancouver in the Canadian Championship Final on September 25. They will then finish with Chicago on the road on the 28th and close out the regular season with two games at home to the New York Red Bulls on October. 2 and Inter Miami on October 5.
