Ten days after we first reported that star CPL defender Daan Klomp was abroad in anticipation of a new opportunity overseas, the defender will now see if he can earn a contract with A-League title contenders Adelaide United.

The 26-year-old Dutchman had returned to former side NAC Breda to train and stay fit as he pursued a move to a higher level. He had left a hefty mark on Canada’s top flight, winning the league with Cavalry after claiming back-to-back defender of the year awards, also winning the league’s MVP award in 2023.

With a Major League Soccer opportunity having passed by while he was under contract in Canada, Klomp was biding his time in the Netherlands as a few Dutch second division offers floated in. The best opportunity by far, it seems, came when A-League title contender Adelaide United wanted to take a close look at him, as per VI.

Australia’s top flight is currently twelve matches in, with Adelaide United holding a one point lead at the top. Should Klomp land a contract there, fans will soon get a direct comparison on how a top Canadian Premier League defender slots into one of the most in-form Australian clubs.

Klomp had been offered a new contract by Cavalry, but had turned down the offer in favour of pursuing a new opportunity elsewhere. His former Canadian home has begun preparations for a continental tilt against Liga MX side Pumas ahead of the regular season’s launch in the spring.

The defender’s spell in Calgary saw him make 121 appearances overall under head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr, where he was a fast and physical presence on a tightknit backline who also proved potent at the other end, racking up some 17 goals and five assists for Cavalry.

For now, it remains to be seen if Daan Klomp will land a spot with the A-League title contenders.
