NWSL-To-NSL: AFC Toronto Signs Croix Soto

Canada’s Northern Super League wanted to be competitive with the NWSL right from the get-go when it comes to attracting talent, and it hasn’t taken long for the fledgling league to bring in its first athlete straight from the US professional women’s league.

AFC Toronto has just confirmed the signing of its first international, with 23-year-old Houston Dash defender Croix Soto joining the club following two seasons in the NWSL. Despite going unselected in the 2023 NWSL Draft, she was picked up by the Kansas City Current and made twelve appearances before her move to the Houston Dash this year.

“AFC Toronto is committed to building a winning team, and signing Croix Soto is a reflection of that vision,” says AFC Toronto head coach Marko Milanovic. “Croix is a player who brings not only defensive skill but also a winner’s mentality and professionalism. Her experience in the NWSL will be invaluable as we establish our identity and goals for the upcoming season. We are excited to see the impact she will have both on and off the pitch.”

The Pasadena, California-born defender clocks in as AFC Toronto’s third signing behind Jade Kovacevic and Leah Pais. While she didn’t rack up big minutes in 2024 – she made just three league appearances for the Dash – her defensive contributions in the inaugural Northern Super League season are expected to be hefty.

“Joining AFC Toronto is such an exciting new chapter, and I’m honoured to be part of this milestone for women’s soccer,” says Croix of the move. “This team is building something really special, and I’m ready to bring my experience and determination to help lay the foundation for success. I’ve heard so many great things about Toronto, and I’m inspired by the league’s vision. I can’t wait to get started and feel the energy of this incredible city.”

The financial details or length of Soto’s contract with AFC Toronto was not disclosed by the club.
