Former CPL Award-Winner Mohamed Farsi Accepts Algeria Call-Up

Columbus Crew’s Mohamed Farsi has, at long last, been called up to the Algeria national team for its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Equatorial Guina and Liberia.

The speedy full-back-turned-winger has tallied some eighty appearances for the Columbus Crew, contributing four goals and eleven assists whilst hoisting both the MLS Cup last season and the Leagues Cup last week. This season also saw him feature in a Concacaf Champions League Final.

Before becoming a Major League Soccer familiar, Farsi had arrived as a relative unknown in the club’s MLS NEXT Pro ranks after turning heads in the Canadian Premier League – though it didn’t take him long to punch upwards into MLS heights.

His time with Cavalry FC in Canada’s top division saw him make 38 appearances throughout two seasons, earning the Quebec-born player a U-21 Canadian Player of the Year award just two years after he arrived from semi-pro side AS Blainville.

Suffice to say, the 24-year-old Montrealer has now established himself well in professional heights, having turned down advances from the Canadian national team last year before deciding to accept Algeria’s call this week.

Algeria will face Equatorial Guina on September 5 and Liberia on September 10, with the latter likely set to feature another former CPL talent in Brem Soumaoro.

Farsi has been a regular starter for the last two seasons under Wilfried Nancy, tallying an assist in last weekend’s 3-1 Leagues Cup win over LAFC.

Suffice to say, the last few seasons have been a great rise in stature for the former Canadian Premier League talent, who is posed to become the first Canadian-born athlete to represent Algeria on the national stage.
