Toronto FC has mutually agreed to terminate its contract with defender Antony Curic, marking an end to the youngster’s Reds career after four seasons.

The defender tallied 57 appearances in MLS NEXT Pro ranks and two for the first team, having turned professional with TFC ahead of the 2021 season. The 23-year-old’s first team debut came against CF Montreal last year, with a short-term deal seeing him ride the bench twice more in 2023 before he featured in the club’s 8-1 home win over semi-pro side CS Saint-Laurent last month.

“He has been a fantastic role model for young players in our environment and his leadership qualities will be missed,” said TFC2 coach Gianni Cimini. “We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”

While there had been some speculation regarding a Canadian Premier League move – particularly given the paths of other former TFC prospects like Themi Antonoglou and Rocco Romeo – that won’t be the case for Curic. He’s currently in Europe in a bid to set up his next move overseas, and holds a Croatian passport.

The centre-back is still touted to have a high ceiling, with his move away from hometown Toronto moreso stemming from a lack of opportunity ahead of him with TFC. With Europe the defender’s priority, it’ll be interesting to see what comes to fruition for him next.

Toronto FC currently find itself in the midst of a five-game winless streak, having dropped a home result to Nashville midweek. TFC2 currently rests in twelfth out of fifteen in its MLS NEXT Pro group.
