After Gonzalez Departure, Atletico Ottawa Coaching Staff Shake-Up Continues
With Atletico Ottawa head coach Carlos Gonzalez having mutually parted ways with the side, the staff roster that has been built around the Spaniard appears to be in for some movement as well.
Ottleti performance analyst Rafa Montenegro Delgado has announced his departure after a full season spent in Canada’s capital, with goalkeeper coach Borja Montero also confirming his exit after three seasons with the club.
“Ottawa will always have a place in my heart for many reasons, personal and professional,” said Montero online. “Many moments lived that will be difficult to forget and that I will always be proud to have lived.”
Monetro had previously worked with Gonzalez during his stint with the Kuwait national team, though it’s unclear what his next steps will be.
“Thank you Atletico Ottawa for this season that I have been able to share with you,” Rafa Montenegro posted. “It has been a great experience of personal and professional growth. Best of luck for the future!”
Rafa’s stint in the Canadian Premier League marked his first time coaching abroad after he had worked as a fitness coach and trainer at a variety of Spanish clubs, including the likes of Vandalia de Peligros, Granada CF, and Malaga CF. He also stepped into an assistant coach role with CD Almunecar City four years ago, and before his Canadian chapter he was a technical assistant with hometown side Antequera CF.
At the moment, other members of Gonzalez’s technical staff like Gonzalo Escudero and David Galan still have Atletico Ottawa in their bios, though it remains to be seen what kind of staff movement will occur when Atletico Madrid helps facilitate a new head coach appointment for its Canadian Premier League side.
This season saw Atletico Ottawa assemble what was described as a superstar roster, with the side finishing third overall and bowing out in the playoff semi-finals to runners-up Forge FC.
