After being selected by Atletico Ottawa in the 2023 CPL-U SPORTS Draft, midfielder Junior Agyekum said he wanted to take his trial as far as possible – and he’s now earned a U SPORTS contract with the club.

The Thompson Rivers University product helped his U SPORTS side to a National Championship last year, but was the only Wolfpack member picked in the draft afterwards.

Agyekum earned Nike Top performer in two of his university’s three national matches, claiming a championship MVP award to conclude a season that saw him start 17 of his 22 matches in 2022.

While excelling to the top of the university level, Atletico Ottawa head coach Carlos Gonzalez has exuded a message of patience with his signing, describing him as a depth piece for now.

“We are very happy to have Junior in the squad, a player that has really good defensive capacities,” said the gaffer. “At the same time, he has room for improvement but is going to be able to help us in the next period, gives us more depth in the squad and more options in the U-21 minutes.”

Born in Calgary, the six-foot-one Agyekum spent time with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Academy and also took part in the inaugural League1 BC season, suiting up for Rivers FC.

The defensive-minded midfielder added an element of attacking prowess last season, so it’ll be interesting to see how he applies himself at the CPL level.

Junior joins Atletico Ottawa on a U SPORTS developmental deal, allowing him to remain U SPORTS eligible if he returns to university in the fall.
