Atletico Ottawa Parts Ways With Draft Pick Agyekum
Canadian Premier League side Atletico Ottawa has confirmed that draft pick Junior Agyekum has left the club by mutual agreement.
The 21-year-old midfielder was signed following his selection in the 2023 CPL-U SPORTS Draft, but found himself unable to break into the setup at Atletico Ottawa.
Riding the bench on two occasions, the six-foot-one defensive-minded midfielder was unable to replicate the success he had at Thompson Rivers University, where he helped his university team to a National Championship last year.
“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Junior Agyekum for his outstanding commitment during his time with our club,” said Atletico Ottawa CEO Fernando Lopez. “It has been a pleasure to witness his progress and growth. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
The Calgary-born athlete had been hoping to take hold of his shot at the pro level. While he certainly might find opportunity elsewhere, his time in the nation’s capital now comes to a close.
The announcement comes as the club teases some inbound talent, with rumours floating that Alberto Zapater – a veteran from Spain – will be arriving. He’d bump Agyekum further down the depth chart, which might explain the move.
The club has four domestic U-21 athletes remaining on the roster, with Gabriel Antinoro and Jean-Aniel Assi earning significant game time, while Zachary Roy and Tyr Walker still awaiting chances for minutes.
Atletico Ottawa isn’t the only club with players on the move, with Cavalry’s Jose Escalante in the midst of a confusing transfer saga and York United’s Lassana Faye headed back to the Netherlands.
