Canadian Premier League side is taking on Spanish full-back Daniel Morer on a season-long loan, reinforcing their right flank with the La Masia product.

The 26-year-old defender joins the club on loan from Portuguese side Famalicao, where he arrived from Barcelona’s reserves in 2020. He’s played alongside Ruben del Campo, and spent the last two seasons on loan with Spanish second division side FC Andorra.

“Dani is a player who will help us have more depth on the right side of our squad. Despite being a defender, he stands out for his dynamism, technical ability, and understanding of the game in the offensive phase,” said head coach Carlos Gonzalez.

The club has certainly added plenty of bite for its attacking phase this offseason, with the likes of Manny Aparicio, Kris Twardek, Matteo de Brienne, Aboubacar Sissoko, and others.

It’s interesting to note the squad needed depth after releasing all-time appearance leader Miguel Acosta, who appeared to wish to stay in the nation’s capital.

Morer will mark the second former Barcelona prospect to join Atletico Ottawa this season, with Ballou Tabla having rejoined after a stint abroad in Turkey.

“He has the ability to play in different positions and we hope to get the best out of him so that he can help us achieve our goals,” continues Gonzalez, hinting that the full-back could be deployed elsewhere on the pitch.

Morer had spent six years developing in Barcelona’s fabled La Masia Academy before he made the big leap up for the Barcelona B team, accruing 42 appearances for the team ahead of his move to Famalicao.

He’s also made ten appearances for Spain at the U-17 level.

Morer will mark the third player to arrive on loan with Atletico Ottawa this season, with Luke Singh arriving from Toronto FC, whilst Villareal’s Liberman Torres is still awaiting his start.

Atletico Ottawa will be called to action tomorrow for a Canadian Championship clash against Valour FC.
