Canadian Premier League side Atletico Ottawa has announced the signing of 19-year-old defender Tyr Walker to a U SPORTS Contract.

Walker, who hails from Russel, Ontario, had featured for the side for its preseason camp in Spain, scoring against UD San Sebastian de los Reyes and evidently leaving a positive impression with club brass.

The local youngster is a product of the St. Anthony Futuro Academy, and had previously been selected by the Atletico Madrid Development program which took place in Ottawa.

“We are thrilled to announce the signing of Tyr Walker to our first team. This is a proud moment for Atletico Ottawa, for the local soccer community, and the whole Ottawa / Gatineau region,” said Atletico Ottawa Fernando Lopez on the signing.

The move comes not long after Atletico Ottawa team manager Drew Beckie had explained the club’s eagerness to help spotlight and grow the careers of local athletes, something which he felt had the nation’s capital needs more of.

Walker had also featured against the CF Montreal U-23 team in April, and will retain his eligibility with the Carleton Ravens as per the terms of his U SPORTS contract.

Atletico Ottawa kicked off its fourth-ever season last weekend, battling to a one-one draw with Halifax in league play before besting them three-nil in cup action.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be offered a contract with my local professional club. Growing up playing soccer, I always dreamt of playing at a high level and as a kid from Ottawa, it’s even more special because I get to represent my hometown, and my city and hopefully make my community proud.”

While Walker admits to some nervousness and pressure that comes with that, he’s looking forward to representing the red-and-white when called upon.

It remains to be seen if he’ll be travelling with the squad set to face Winnipeg’s Valour FC tomorrow, with the home side currently top of the table after week one.
