Shome Cracks Preliminary Bangladesh Squad
Cavalry midfielder Shamit Shome is one step closer to making his national team debut for Bangladesh.
The 27-year-old midfielder has been named by head coach Javier Cabrera to the country’s preliminary roster ahead of two upcoming matches.
The inclusion comes just weeks after Shome, who was born in Alberta, filed his one-time change of national association from Canada to Bangladesh, where both his parents have heritage.

The Bangladesh national team will tune up in a friendly tilt against Bhutan on June 4 before a competitive AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier against Singapore on June 10.
Bangladesh will play both games at home, with Shome expected to receive quite a warm welcome.
The occasion could see Shamit Shome play alongside former Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury, who joined Bangladesh this year after appearing for England at the youth level.
Similarly, Shome had featured for Canada at the youth level and later made two appearances for Les Rouges at the senior level, both times against Barbados via international friendlies.

Shome’s career got started as a standout with an NASL-era FC Edmonton. Turning heads as a teen, he earned a Generation Adidas contract with Major League Soccer, with CF Montreal selecting him in the subsequent MLS SuperDraft.
He collected a Canadian Championship trophy while in La Belle Province, tallying some 52 appearances while completing his university degree at the same time.
Following a return to the CPL-era FC Edmonton side, he made the jump to Cavalry FC, winning the North Star Cup trophy with them last fall as a squad regular and establishing himself as a core member of Tommy Wheeldon Jr’s title-winning team.
