Christine Sinclair Feels Deal For World Cup Compensation Is Imminent
Canadian Christine Sinclair, one of the leaders of the women’s national team, spoke about getting a deal done in her final press conference before Australia.
She feels confident that a deal will get done before the team leaves for the World Cup.
“It’s not going to be some long-term deal, but it will at least cover this year,” said Sinclair. She feels a deal is imminent before the team leaves on Monday to begin a pre-tournament camp.
Sinclair has been one of the leaders in its fight for gender equality and pay equity.
Newly appointed Canada Soccer interim General Secretary Jason DeVos stated a desire to get this issue resolved as quickly as possible.
“The Americans have gone through it, it’s a long, slow, drawn-out process to get what we deserve,” Sinclair said. “I have full confidence that it’s going to happen in the next couple of days. I have no doubt that it’s going to happen.”
The players both men and women have been demanding equal treatment and want the same historic deal the US players secured with US Soccer last year.
The women will travel to Australia’s Gold Coast with 25 players and on July 9, Bev Priestman will announce her 23-player roster for the tournament.
Canada opens the World Cup on July 21st against Nigeria in Melbourne at the Rectangular Stadium in Melbourne Park.
