Mauro Biello To Lead CanMNT In Copa America Qualifier

Canada Soccer revealed on Friday morning that interim manager Mauro Biello will continue to be in charge for the crucial Concacaf Nations League Play-off match against Trinidad & Tobago.

The winner of this matchup will book their place into Group A of the 2024 Copa America and will face the likes of Peru, Chile, and reigning World Champions Argentina in June.

Mauro Biello was announced as the interim manager after John Herdman stepped down from the position in late-August to acquire the top job at Toronto FC.

Canada Soccer confirmed in September that Biello would remain the interim manager until a new General Secretary was found.

This role has now been filled, as former Canadian Olympic Committee executive Alyson Walker was announced as Canada Soccer’s first-ever female General Secretary in late December. However, she has yet to begin as she is due to commence her role on January 22.

It is likely due to this leadership hire falling very close on the heels of the Nations League Playoff that Canada Soccer has decided to continue with Biello, despite public outcries for change.

Biello’s stock in the public eye has been mixed after the stunning collapse to Jamaica at home. This followed after a historic victory of the Reggae Boyz on their home turf, but with that shocking defeat at BMO Field in November condemning the team to this last-gasp tie to qualify for Copa in the first place, many fans and pundits feel that change should have been due before the this match against Trinidad & Tobago.

It will remain to be seen whether a good result and performance from Canada against Trinidad will help Biello’s case to get the full-time job, or whether Canada Soccer will be looking elsewhere regardless.

Canada will face Trinidad and Tobago on March 23 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
