Biello Releases CanMNT Roster Ahead Of Nations League Quarter-Final Against Jamaica
Mauro Biello revealed his squad on Wednesday morning ahead of the 2023 Concacaf Nations League Quarterfinal against Jamaica. The team will play in Kingston on the 17th and in Toronto at BMO Field on the 21st.
“I’m really excited about the upcoming matches and what they can lead our team to,” said, the Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team Interim Head Coach. “Our mission is to make it to the Concacaf Final and also to qualify for next year’s Copa America. We know that these upcoming two matches will be difficult against a solid opponent, in difficult conditions, so that is why we decided on an experienced and seasoned group of players who are used to high pressure games.”
This quarterf-inal will prove to be crucial if Canada is looking to book a spot in next year’s Copa America and getting past the Reggae Boyz will confirm their spot.
The Men’s National team currently has a record of 10 wins, seven draws, and six losses and most recently met back on March 3rd, 2022 when Canada beat them 4-0 to book a spot at the World Cup in Qatar for the first time in 36 years.
Biello couldn’t overstate the importance of this tie and window and says he picked his best squad.
“For us, we get a chance at a finals in Nations League and Copa America qualification so it is a very big window. I was able to get the players that I wanted – this group has been in these moments before with a strong brotherhood so that was very important.”
Two players who were not in Japan but are back with the team are Stephen Eustaquio and Tajon Buchanan, who returned from injury. Biello was very pleased to have them back.
“I picked players who I know can help us win at the end of the day that is my job.”
In goal, Biello went with his top three goalkeepers Milan Borjan, Maxime Crepeau (who has been in-and-out of the team due to injury), and Dayne St Clair.
On the backend, he selected Derek Cornelius, Steven Vitoria, Luc De Fougerelloes, Alistair Johnston, Kamal Miller, Sam Adekugbe, Alphonso Davies, and Richie Laryea.
In the midfield, we have Ali Ahmed, Stephen Eustaquio, Mark Anthony Kaye, Isamel Kone, Jonathan Osorio, and Samuel Piette.
For his forwards, Biello picked Tajon Buchanan, Lucas Cavallini, Jonathan David, Cyle Larin, and Liam Miller. The full roster is below:
