Canada to Play United States In July
On Monday morning, Canada Soccer announced that the Canadian Women’s team will play the United States in Washington on July 2.
Placed squarely between Canada’s Canada Day and the US’ Independence Day, the match will be Casey Stoney‘s first big test against the reigning Olympic champions.
“Facing the Olympic champions will be a great test for us,” said Stoney on the match. “They were the best in the world in 2024 and will challenge us in areas we have been tested in yet this year. This will be a great opportunity to test ourselves and give us a barometer of where we are and what work we need to do to progress and prepare for the future.”
Canada will look to break a long-standing winless streak on American soil, having not won since November 11th, 2000.
In the last two years the team faced their archrivals twice, once in the Concacaf W Gold Cup and once in the SheBelieves Cup. Both times, Canada forced the match to go to penalties, and both times they were narrowly defeated from the spot. Luckily for Stoney, the games showcased how level the two sides were last year, giving the English Head Coach a solid foundation to build off of.
Canada will also have a different opponent for a second match during that window whom will be announced on a later date.
