World Cup Injury Watch: Flores Suffers Knee Injury For Tigres

Canadian national team fans are on alert after Tigres forward Marcelo Flores went down with a non-contact knee injury in the Concacaf Champions Cup final this weekend.

The 22-year-old Georgetown, Ontario native went down with a non-contact knee injury after just 15 minutes on the pitch, having been sent on by Tigres boss Guido Pizarro midway through the second half. The forward was winding his way into the Toluca box, twisted to the left with his right knee planted, felt it ‘give out’ and quickly dropped to the pitch clutching his right knee in agony.

Flores was selected as one of the 26 athletes representing Canada at the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, having chosen Les Rouges over Mexico. With what could very turn out to be a long-term knee injury, however, his ticket to the world’s premier sporting competition is in jeopardy.

Tigres UANL head coach Guido Pizarro told media after the match that the outlook of Marcelo’s knee injury was ‘not encouraging’, though the club is awaiting the results of medical scans to determine the severity.

Flores had exited the pitch without being able to bear weight on his knee, with the non-contact injury feared to be an ACL tear. He appeared after his club’s penalty shootout loss with a knee brace, with teammates helping him navigate the pitch post-game following Tigres’ penalty loss.

Flores had developed through Mexico’s youth ranks and had played in three matches for their senior team, having been called up for the 2024 Copa America without getting any minutes. He requested a FIFA one-time international switch to Canada this February, making his Canadian debut in a friendly against Iceland before appearing against Tunisia in March.

Four Takeaways From Canada’s Draw With Iceland

With the Canadian men’s national team already marching into the World Cup with a staggering number of knocks and still-recovering players, the loss of Marcelo Flores would be yet another setback for Canada on the road to 2026. Jesse Marsch may have to look at another forward replacement, with Daniel Jebbison the a potential frontrunner. The Bournemouth prospect was expected to make the squad if not for the speedy recovery of Promise David, though it’s worth noting that Ralph Priso has travelled with the team to Edmonton as a training player.

For now, however, Marcelo Flores will be hoping for his own speedy recovery – though in the world of non-contact injuries, the assumed prognosis is never good.
