The Canadian Championship is expanding to feature the championship winners of League1 BC beginning the next year.

The move had been an expected one ever since the inaugural League1 BC took place out west, with TSS Rovers claiming the trophy.

That means the 2023 Canadian Championship fill now feature five different leagues: the Canadian Premier League, Major League Soccer, PLSQ, League1 Ontario, and the newly-launched League1 BC.

The total number of teams will depend on whether FC Edmonton is still left standing, however.

“After a successful inaugural season, League1 BC is now a welcome addition to the Canadian Championship for the 2023 season,” said Canada Soccer President Nick Bontis. “With teams from five different leagues across the country, the Canadian Championship provides an exciting pathway on the road to Concacaf Champions League and ultimate the FIFA Club World Cup.”

The League1 BC representative will be one of three semi-professional teams in the domestic cup, alongside the entrants from League1 Ontario and PLSQ.

The winner of the 2023 Canadian Championship will earn a berth to the Concacaf Champions League. To date, no semi-professional team has come closing to managing the feat. This year saw the Vancouver Whitecaps hoist the trophy.

Details on next year’s draw and match schedule are expected to be announced early next year.
