It was announced on Thursday morning that the Canadian Men’s National Team will play the Netherlands in a friendly on June 6. The match will take place in Rotterdam, at the Stadion Feijenoord, which Dutch side Feyenoord call home.

“We are very excited for our Menโ€™s National Team to be playing a Top 6 FIFA-ranked opponent,” remarked incoming Canada Soccer General Secretary and CEO Kevin Blue. “The opportunity to play against the top teams in the world will serve as an opportunity to continue our development on the journey to our home FIFA World Cup.โ€

Should Canada beat Trinidad and Tobago in the upcoming Nations League Playoff later this month, this match against the Dutch will suit as a formidable warm-up ahead of the 2024 Copa America.

In turn, this fixture will also serve as a warm-up for the Netherlands, as it comes right before the 2024 European Championship, where the Netherlands will be facing Austria, France and one of Wales, Finland, Poland, or Estonia in the Group Stages. Ons Oranje will also face Iceland prior to the start of the tournament.

This marks the Canadian men’s national team’s highest FIFA Ranked team faced (#6) since facing Belgium (#2 at the time) in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. There have been outcries from the public and even former staff for Canada to play tougher opposition than what they are used to in Concacaf, and it seems that we will finally get to see that in this upcoming June window.

With the 2026 World Cup just over two years away, it is prime time to get Canada acclimated once more to facing some of the world’s best teams, starting with the Netherlands.
