Forge 2-1 HFX Wanderers: Hammers Stay Unbeaten
Forge FC returned to winning ways on Sunday, getting the better of the Halifax Wanderers 2-1 in Hamilton. That gave them their fourth league win of the campaign.
The hosts made two changes from last weekend’s 1-1 stalemate against Cavalry. One was forced, as Nana Ampomah was suspended for yellow card accumulation.
As for Halifax, who lost 2-0 in Laval versus York United, they made three changes to their team for this one. Perhaps most notably, Sean Rea was dropped to the bench, though he would come in later on.
The game started off with few chances as the sides felt each other out. However, the game’s opening goal would come in the 25th minute. Wesley Timoteo did not see Hoce Massunda come from behind him, with the 19-year-old dispossessing him and hitting a volley pass Rayane Yesli. It was a great strike from the winger to put his team in front.
Halifax went down the field and won a free kick right after conceding. Jassem Koleilat was able to get a hand on the initial ball in, but Lorenzo Callegari’s follow-up sailed over the bar.
With a bit less than 10 minutes before halftime, Giorgio Probo picked out Yohan Bai, but the latter fired wide. It was a good chance to test Koleilat there.
Forge started the better side in the second half, and nearly doubled their advantage right away. Massunda’s cross requires intervention from Adam Pearlman, taking it off Brian Wright’s foot.
Just before the hour mark, the visitors had another great opportunity. Off a Probo corner, Thomas Meilleur-Giguere was wide open inside the box, but hit his half volley off the mark.
While Halifax did start to get more of the possession, they ultimately conceded again. Khadim Kane, who just came on, turned his man and found Mo Babouli. Playing it out to Massunda, he created enough space to play a cross to an open Wright. Yesli was helpless as the Forge number nine headed it home from close range.
The Wanderers would get on the scoresheet with eight and a half minutes remaining. Timoteo’s cross hit the inside of the post, but it fell to Jason Bahamboula. The Congolese international kicked it in, giving the visitors some hope.
However, that was the best it would get for Patrice Gheisar’s men, as they remain winless all-time at Hamilton Stadium. They stay second despite dropping their second straight match. They return home for next week’s clash with Cavalry.
As for Forge, who is undefeated in eleven to start the year, they join the Wanderers and Cavalry on 17 points. They are off to the west coast next to take on last-place Vancouver FC.
