Busy Winter Signals Big Ambitions for Inter Toronto
It remains to be seen if the Pasquel Brothers’ third season with Inter Toronto might be the charm, but it will certainly usher in a new era for the club.
Having just rebranded the side from York United to Inter Toronto Football Club, the months leading up to what is being dubbed an inaugural campaign have been intriguing, to say the least – particularly in terms of the club’s recruitment.
Inter Toronto: On A New Look, Lamport, And Lack Of Nine Stripes
Toronto kickstarted its rebrand with the unveiling of former CPL MVP Ollie Bassett, breaking a few hearts in the Canadian capital by capturing the English midfielder on a free transfer from Tampa Bay. The side would continue to add some intriguing international flair to its ranks, bringing in Ecuadorian top-flight winger Ariel Almagaro and veteran Liga MX full-back Raul Lopez, the latter of whom made the bulk of his 400 appearances in Mexico’s top flight.

In a blockbuster move that caught everyone by surprise, spurned Forge star Beni Badibanga jumped across derby lines to sign with Inter Toronto. The Belgian was a top CPL talent who spent last season in contract purgatory, after which no one would reasonably expect him to stay in CPL. Inter Toronto did a fine job of convincing him to stay, however, and now they’ve got a lethal talent in their ranks.
Last week saw the team dip into Peru for its next hire, adding striker Sebastian Gonzales. Having amassed over one hundred appearances in his country’s top flight, he isn’t the only seasoned addition brought in over the last few days: Mexican right-back Carlos Guzman was also recruited, coming in from Monterey Bay after having amassed over 200 Liga MX appearances throughout his career.
The club has had some intriguing offseasons in the past, but this offseason feels particularly optimistic.
Domestic defender Frank Sturing‘s return was also a welcome surprise: out-of-contract and skipped over in the club’s end-of-season roster update, the 28-year-old Dutch-Canadian seemed to be on his way out. In a surprise twist, Inter Toronto Football Club got his signature for a third straight season, bolstering their backline alongside returning leadership figure Oswaldo Leon.

As if one unexpected boost at the back wasn’t enough, Chilean-Canadian Juan Cordova has confirmed his return to the club after a season with Union San Felipe. The 30-year-old was a bright spark with Toronto back in ’24 and clocks in as another unexpected, but welcome, surprise for Inter Toronto fans.
The capacity for inbound players rests on the decisions to send others packing, however. Some of those departures were unsurprising: Shaan Hundal, Adonijah Reid, and Nyal Higgins never quite struck a long-term groove with the side, while Cameron De Silva never broke into it. Riley Ferazzo, Massimo Ferrin, and Elijah Adekugbe marked the biggest departures, with Lionel Lopez, Diego Urtiaga, and fan-favourite loanee Orlando Botello all returning to Mexico.
Fans will certainly be happy with the ones who remained, though.
Striker Julian Altobelli stayed put following his fifteen-goal haul last season, club talisman Max Ferrari is back for a sixth year, and re-signed midfielder Kembo Kibato is proving to be a great pickup and one of the league’s smartest trades. Let’s not forget Gabriel Bitar came in from another trade with Vancouver in ’25, with the Lebanon international adding seven goal contributions last season.

There’s young talent on display too: Canadian international Shola Jimoh is still approaching his 18th birthday, Luca Accettola is back after impressing in his rookie campaign, and goalkeeper Ivan Pavela has been entrusted with a lot of responsibility in his own sophomore season.
The verdict is still out on Antonio Campos, which will either mark a deep scouting success or explain why Jorge Campos agreed to make an appearance to sign autographs at York Lions Stadium, while summertime reinforcement Jesse Costa is still awaiting a chance to shine.
It’s odd to say because this is the Pasquel Brothers‘ third season at the helm, but in no season will their ambitions be gauged more than this one: with the rebrand done, the club has now been morphed to fit their vision in totality, aside from remaining at York Lions Stadium for at least one more year.
One more chance for the stadium to witness a Canadian Premier League side challenge for trophies, perhaps.

It remains to be seen what the buy-in will be for both the rebrand and the planned eventual move downtown. There will be some holdouts attached to the old name and its old colours, or perhaps others feeling tired after three rebrands in seven years. The York moniker is truly done and dusted now, though. ITO’s new kit featuring six stripes instead of nine is tantamount to a line in the sand, shedding any attachment to the brand that came before it – thus, Inter Toronto calls 2026 its inaugural season.
Love it or hate it, the roster build ahead of it is quite a head-turner.
There’s still a few roster spots left, so fans might see another surprise or two ahead of kickoff in April. In spreparation for the big campaign, Inter Toronto Football Club will be flying out to the Dominican Republic. The Las Vegas Lights revealed they’ll be squaring up against the CPL side there, though it remains to be seen who else will face the CPL side as it prepares for the 2026 Canadian Premier League season – the club’s eighth, but Inter Toronto’s first.

I have the most respect for the owners in this league. Selling a league that isn’t at the top of the world is always going to be difficult, even more here in Toronto and the surrounding area. Without the history and the deep-rooted sense of pride the CPL is a always going to face an uphill battle.
As someone who embraced the York brand from the start the Inter Toronto and desired move into Toronto hurts. I really do wish the Pasquel brothers all the success with the club. Hopefully the day comes when the dream of that stadium that Greenpark had planned comes to fruition and the Nine Stripes rise again.
For my money the black Y9 kit with the map or York Region on it is the best kit the league has ever come up with.
