Introducing The Canadian Shield – Canada Soccer’s Newest Home Tournament
On Wednesday, Canada Soccer announced the creation of a new annual friendly tournament called “The Canadian Shield”.
The four-team competition will take place at BMO Field in Toronto, and this year’s edition will feature Ukraine, Cote d’Ivoire, and New Zealand. Taking place on June 7 and June 10 of this year, the tournament will look to test Canada against some fierce competitors ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The inaugural competition will have double matchdays on both dates, allowing fans to truly get a bang-for-their buck as one ticket will cover both of that day’s matches. Perhaps more importantly, these matches will serve as further preparation for the Men’s team as they count down the days to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Every competitive match from now until the World Cup will be critical to get our team the preparation it needs ahead of welcoming the world next year,” said Jesse Marsch, head coach of the Men’s National Team. “This is an extraordinary addition to our annual competitive calendar and to be able to play at home in front of our fans again will be really special for our guys.”
According to the release, the tournament’s name and logo is ‘inspired by the Canada Coat of Arms’, as ‘the shield, a common badge of fandom and honour in the sport, paired with soccer elements integrated into the design celebrates both the heritage and spirit of the gamez’
However, there has been no confirmation if there will be a trophy and, if so, if it will reflect this inspiration.
Furthemore, the event will be one presented by MLSE, SPORTFIVE, and MIB Sport Agency, who have partnered with the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario to help facilitate this new annual tournament.
“Toronto is preparing to play host to the biggest sporting event in the world next summer, and with it, brings the opportunity to make history,” said Keith Pelley, President & CEO of MLSE. “The Canadian Shield will not only give the Canadian Men’s National Team a chance to prepare against some of the best competition in the world, but it continues to build the excitement for the city and the global fans here of the ‘beautiful game’.”
“We are grateful to the partners who have helped us bring this tournament to life, including the Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto, and we look forward to welcoming the world-class teams from Ukraine, Côte d’Ivoire and New Zealand to our city in June.”
The tournament will be the standard group stage format that fans are used to in other competitions, with the only notable change being that if the score is tied after 90 minutes, the teams will not only get a point for the draw but will be able to score an extra point if they win the ensuing penalty shoot-out, meaning every match will have a victor.
Canada will open the tournament with a match against Ukraine at 3:30PM on June 7th, followed by the 7PM game between New Zealand and Cote d’Ivoire. On June 10, it will be the Kiwi’s that kick off that days matches against Ukraine, while Canada will face Côte d’Ivoire. It is unconfirmed what the cause was for the tournament to have each team only face two of the three opponents instead of the typical three matchdays.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public on March 21st at 2PM ET/11AM PT.
