Cavalry Inks Charlie Trafford To Multi-Year Deal
The 31-year-old has established himself a constant presence with Cavalry since joining two years ago, with the past season seeing him feature in all but three possible games through all competitions. The 2023 CPL season saw Trafford’s side finish as regular season champions and finish runners-up in the playoffs despite a stalwart effort from the central midfielder.
Trafford, who ha evolved into a leadership figure amongst the squad, has now signed a brand new two-year deal with Cavalry that includes a club option for 2026.
“Charlie is a valuable presence to us on and off the pitch,” opined head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “He is very good at starting our attacks from within our half and very important in the manner he breaks up the opponents attacks with his physicality and intelligence. On top of that, he is a person that cares about the city he is from, and it shows in the way he plays for our crest and his daily habits with the group as an emotional leader.”
The Calgary native had spent his entire career abroad ahead Cavalry’s acquisition of him tow years ago. Having featured in the Netherlands, Finland, Poland, Scotland, and Wales, the midfielder has tallied over 250 professional appearances throughout his career thus far.
Trafford has also made three appearances for the national team, with his first call-up seeing him named to replace Kyle Bekker ahead of his debut against Ghana back in 2015.
Last season saw the veteran lead the squad for both passes completed (89%) and duals won with (66%). With Diego Gutierrez also set to join the midfield line-up, Tommy Wheeldon Jr. will have quite a selection headache as he seeks to defend the regular season championship.
Ahead of that, Trafford and the Cavalry squad will test themselves in continental action against MLS side Orlando City next month.
