Cavalry Secures Return Of Star CPL Defender Daan Klomp

It’s official: Daan Klomp is back with Cavalry FC.

The Dutch defender had left Cavalry on a high after helping secure their first national championship last season, with the sizeable centre-back accruing back-to-back defender of the year awards and a league MVP award during his spell in Alberta.

Cavalry had sought to retain the defender following the club’s title win last season, but Klomp – who had previously played for Eredevisie side NAC Breda, along with FC Oss and Helmond Sport – wished to pursue a new opportunity, shopping himself to A-League side Adelaide United before eventually landing in Belgium with RAAL La Louviere instead.

Things didn’t take off for Klomp there, with the defender departing last week after making just two substitute appearances at the tail end of Louviere’s last campaign.

“Daan’s return is perfect for our run-in and longer-term planning,” says Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.

The defender had made 121 appearances in a four-year spell under the Cavalry gaffer, where Klomp proved to be not just a fast and physical presence on a tightknit backline, but also potent at the other end of the pitch, racking up some 17 goals and five assists for Cavalry.

Cavalry’s title defense season has hit a slump right now, so Klomp’s return is expected to be a big boost in the hunt for silverware this year.

“Not only is he a big presence out on the pitch, but he also carries a big leadership role within our locker room. He’s been a pivotal part of our successes in recent years and has shown to have been one of the league’s best players. I am delighted to have him back and I’m sure our fans will be too.”
