Cavalry Adds Everton Loanee Jack Barrett
Cavalry has secured its goalkeeper competition for Marco Carducci, adding 21-year-old English goalkeeper Jack Barrett on loan from Everton’s youth ranks.
The six-foot-three goalkeeper has been part of the Premier League side’s academy system since he was nine, progressing up to the U-21 squad ranks and featuring three times in Premier League 2 action.
“Jack fits the profile of the goalkeeper we like,” said head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr following the loan confirmation.
“He is an excellent distributor of the ball and can quarterback the play, whilst being quick to deal with danger very well. He’s had a good upbringing from a young age at a top club and will provide excellent depth in our goalkeeping position.”
Barrett’s arrival indicates that free agent Niko Giantsopoulos won’t be landing with the team, though it remains to be seen if York United still has a roster spot left for the 29-year-old.
Cavalry has been known to hand a third goalkeeper spot to one of its younger signings – perhaps on a developmental deal – though nothing has been made official as of yet.
“I’m delighted to be here, and I can’t wait to get started with the squad. I spoke with Tommy and Jake [Davis] and was instantly impressed with their plans for this season,” adds Barret himself.
“This opportunity is one that I couldn’t miss, and I can’t wait to be part of such a successful club.”
While no goalkeeper has successful usurped Marco Carducci’s starting spot since the club’s inception, the reigning regular season champions have both a strong domestic cup track record and the promise of continental football in the near future, too.
Barrett’s loan from Everton is believed to be a season-long one. Last week also saw the Alberta-based side bring in midfielder Lucas Dias on loan from Sporting Lisbon.
