Herdman Heads To Cavalry
Following Jay Herdman’s highly successful midseason loan with Cavalry FC, the 20-year-old has now signed on fully with the Canadian Premier League club for the 2025 season.
Herdman completed eight appearances for the club last season whilst on loan from VFC2, talliying one goal and one assist in eight appearances, two of which came during the club’s playoff period that landed them the North Star Cup.
Having previously tallied six goals and three assists in 20 appearances with the Whitecaps’ MLS NEXT Pro outfit, he slotted in perfectly as a replacement for Mael Henry following the latter’s season-ending injury.
Herdman, who represents New Zealand at the U-23 level, had also made his senior Whitecaps debut last April as a substitute against the Seattle Sounders.

“Jay was an important addition to our run-in last season and made an instant impact,” said Tommy Wheeldon Jr, who said their playoff-winning season was a nice cap on an emotional year. “He is a player that is very shifty and able to find or create space, as well as possesses a terrific competitive edge that suits our DNA.”
The Cavalry squad is currently preparing for a continental tilt against Liga MX powerhouse Pumas, though the full roster is still somewhat of a mystery – particularly with what the club will do with Daan Klomp set to test himself outside of Canada.
Pertinently, the club’s 2025 roster now includes star forward Ali Musse, who will be seen as a huge addition to the club’s title defense aspirations. The club also appears to have triggered its options on Callum Montgomery, Shamit Shome, Jesse Daley, Joseph Holliday, and Michael Harms.
