It’s official: one day after we reported that Cavalry led the race to sign Lowell Wright, the Canadian Premier League side has confirmed the capture of the 20-year-old striker.

The club has also confirmed the mutual termination of Austrlain forward Lleyton Brooks‘ contract.

Wright had been loosed by Whitecaps FC 2 back in may after tallying 7 goals in 18 MLS NEXT Pro appearances. While he had bursts of form, there were some muscle problems with the youngster which have now led to his return to the CPL level.

It was there where Wright turned professional with York United at the age of sixteen, with the big Brampton-born teenager contributing nine goals and five assists over the next two seasons for the Nine Stripes.

He had also featured for the Canada U-20 squad back then, bagging two goals in four appearances whilst on duty with them.

“Lowell is the type of profile I love working with,” revealed Cavalry gaffer Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “He is young and talented, with a high ceiling of potential. He’s already had success in the CPL in his early years, and I’m sure our supporters will be excited to see his talent once again, this time in our colours. He will add more attacking options and will be a goal threat for us as we enter the business end of the season.”

For Wright, the connection is more close to home than one would guess: his father emigrated to Calgary from Jamaica in the ’80s, with many of his family still calling the city home.

With the striker having been shopped to Europe, re-establishing himself at a club known for selling young domestic talent abroad is a logical move. The club has been struggling to produce goals with Myer Bevan absent and William Akio injured, with Wright joining season newcomers Tobias Warschewski and Malcolm Shaw.

As part of the club’s mid-season roster changes, Aussie winger Lleyton Brooks has mutually terminated a contract that was originally slated to run through to the end of 2025.

“The club thanks Lleyton for his contributions throughout the 2024 season and wishes him all the best in the next chapter of his career,” reads a statement from Cavalry.

The 23-year-old Australian had appeared in most of Cavalry’s matches, tallying seventeen appearances through all competitions but ultimately contributing just one assist against York United.

Cavalry will face Vancouver FC in Langley tomorrow. While it’s unclear if Wright will be included in the squad, it would be his first opportunity to play against the CPL’s newest team.
