One of Cavalry’s club originals has committed his future to the club.

Midfield commander Sergio Camargo has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the club that includes a club option for 2026, potentially seeing him stay with the club for up to eight years in all.

The 29-year-old is set to make his one hundredth appearance for the team in this weekend’s season opener against Forge, with the attacking midfielder having contributed 21 goals and 10 assists during his time in red so far.

Head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.’s relationship with the player extends to before Cavalry itself, with the midfielder having joined up with him at the Calgary Foothills in 2018.

“Sergio has really established himself as one of the top players in this league. As he has matured, he has added so much to his game in both attacking and defensive aspects,” says Wheeldon Jr. on his veteran attacker.

Last season saw the midfielder – who had sometimes struggled with injuries – tally 28 appearances throughout the year. He transitioned well into the leadership team, being named as one of the club’s captains alongside another club original Marco Carducci.

“In addition to that, his excellent leadership skills bring others along with him. I’m delighted to get the opportunity to work with him for longer, his intelligence on the pitch and his emotional intelligence off the pitch is a rare combination and I’m thankful he wears our crest.”

Sergio and the Cavalry FC squad will march into Tim Hortons Field tomorrow hoping to enact some regular season revenge for how the 2023 CPL Final played out there last year.

“There’s no other team I’d ever play for in the CPL,” says Sergio himself. “It means everything that the club continues to invest in me, and I will continue to give my all every time I step onto the pitch as I represent the club and its fans. I have felt at home since day one and I look forward to bringing more trophies to Calgary this season.”
