Seeing Red: Shamit Shome Lands Three-Match Cup Ban

Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC will be without Shamit Shome for the club’s next three Canadian Championship matches.

The midfielder was shown a straight red by referee Pierre-Luc Lauziere following a studs-up challenge on Vasco Fry, though his team eventually climbed to a one-nil win in their midweek cup game against Vancouver FC.

Canada Soccer has now posted a three-match Canadian Championship ban for the Cavalry midfielder, however.

That means that Cavalry will be without the former MLS midfielder for its tantalizing cup matches against Vancouver Whitecaps. Cavalry will host the MLS side on May 7, with the away leg taking place on May 21.

Should Cavalry repeat history with an underdog win, Shome would remain suspended for the first leg of the subsequent semi-final, and would only return for the second leg.

As a somewhat silver lining for Cavalry, the midfielder is only suspended for Canadian Championship matches. He returned to action in league play last night, featuring in all ninety minutes in a scoreless home draw against Pacific FC.

The 26-year-old – who once won the Voyageurs Cup with CF Montreal – has tallied 27 appearances for Cavalry since arriving from FC Edmonton last season. His contract carries a club option for 2025.

Before his time in the CPL he’d racked up some 52 appearances for CF Montreal, so his experience will certainly be missed in the club’s high-profile cup home-and-away matchup against Vancouver Whitecaps next month.

Shamit is expected to be back on the pitch for the club’s league match against Vancouver FC – against whom he saw his red card – this Friday.
