On Friday afternoon, despite already seeing him at practice at the Nutrilait Centre in Montreal, the team confirmed a transfer and a contract for Fernando Alvarez.

Alvarez comes to CF Montreal from Liga MX side CF Pachuca and has agreed to a three-year contract with the last two years as option years.

“We are delighted to welcome Fernando to the club,” said Vice-President and Chief Sporting Officer Olivier Renard. “He is a player who stood out this summer at the U20 World Cup in Argentina as one of the tournament’s best central defenders. In addition to the advantage of his American citizenship, he has a solid physical frame with the ability to quickly restart play.”

Alvarez was born in the US to Colombian and Mexican parents. Currently only 19 years old, he joined C.F. Pachuca in 2020 and began playing with its affiliate CF Pachuca Premier in the Premier League, which is Mexico’s third division.

He made his debut with the big club on October 25, 2021, in a 1-1 draw with FC Juarez in the Tomeo Apertura. So far this summer he featured with the U-23 team in three games.

On the international stage, he is eligible to play with the USA, Mexico, and Colombia and got call-ups from Mexico for U16 and U18 while playing for the Colombia U-20 team at the South American U20 Championship in 2023.
