Vancouver FC original Min-Jae Kwak will be taking his next steps with MLS Next Pro side Chattanooga FC, where he’s signed a one-year contract with a club option for 2025.

He becomes the second Canadian Premier League player to land with Chattanooga this off-season, with Wanderers midfielder Callum Watson being sold to club this January.

The South Korean midfielder had tallied 27 appearances for The Eagles‘ debut season before departing, having previously played for NISA sides C Syracuse Pulse and California United Strikers FC. He tallied four goals and earned 2022 NISA Best Eleven honours with the latter, and even had a stint with Croatian side HNK Gorica when he was 19.

The 23-year-old has suited up against his new club multiple times: prior to stepping up to MLS NEXT Pro heights this year, Chattanooga played in NISA, where two of Kwak’s former clubs play. As it turns out, that familiarity was a key part of the signing.

“Over the last couple of years we’ve had certain characteristics in players and he fits those”, says Chattanooga’s head coach and sporting director Rod Underwood.

“We were making some changes in the characteristics this year and he fit those. This is a guy we’ve watched for a significant amount of time. He’s versatile, much like many of the players we’ve signed, and he can play multiple positions. He has attacking and defending qualities that simply fit into what we want to do. We expect him to come in and challenge everyone and push everyone.”

The former Vancouver FC man will don the number eighteen at Finley Stadium.
