Meet Raphael Ohin: he’s the last man standing from Valour FC’s inaugural Canadian Premier League campaign, and despite consecutive seasons of injuries the midfielder has fought back to formally re-sign with Winnipeg’s CPL side.

There had been plenty of uncertainty regarding whether Ohin’s time on the field for Valour had ended unceremoniously with in an injury against the TSS Rovers last year, curtailing his season in just his second match – and to make matters worse, that came after he’d already been sidelined for the full 2022 CPL season after suffering an ACL tear in preseason.

The Ghanaian midfielder has been with the club all preseason long, doing enough during the club’s stint in Portugal to convince head coach Phillip Dos Santos he was worth a roster spot.

“Raph is an important player for this club,” added Dos Santos on the club original’s return. “He had to fight hard and overcome a lot of adversity over the past couple of years. We believe that he’s fully recovered and ready to help the team reach its objectives.”

The boss had seen what a healthy Ohin could do back in 2021 – Phillip’s first season in charge – with Ohin tallying 28 appearances as the side finished one point outside of playoffs, its closest run yet.

Ohin has made 59 all-time appearances for the Winnipeg-based club, which makes him the active appearance leaderfor the side following the departures of Diego Gutierrez and Andy Baquero this offseason.

The midfielder first arrived to Winnipeg in 2016 after playing for academy sides in his native Ghana, Switzerland, and Thailand. After settling in Canada, he spent three seasons developing with PDL side WSA Winnipeg (now FC Manitoba) before signing with Valour FC ahead of the inaugural Canadian Premier League season.

Ohin’s return comes the same day as Atletico Ottawa announced that its last club original, Malcolm Shaw, was departing the nation’s capital.
