Vancouver FC Sell James Cameron To Colorado Rapids
In a window of big sales for the Canadian Premier League, Vancouver FC has added to its revenue with yet another sale of a top prospect, James Cameron. The CPL 2023 Best Canadian U-21 Player of the Year nominee has moved to MLS side Colorado Rapids, specifically landing with their MLS NEXT Pro team Rapids 2.
AFTN.ca first reported the transfer back in mid-January, with the youngster joining the Rapids pre-season camp down in Mexico, with reported visa delays potentially holding up the official sale.
Cameron, 20, made 37 appearances for Vancouver FC across two seasons, and scored one goal. The forward-turned-fullback burst onto the scene after a successful open trial in 2023, earning himself the league’s first Exceptional Young Talent contract alongside fellow Eagle TJ Tahid.
By the end of 2023, his performances were impressive enough to earn him a nomination for Best Canadian U-21 Player of the Year, losing to Matteo de Brienne. In between 2023 and 2024, Cameron found himself in England for some trials but ended up staying with VFC for the 2024 season, a year in which the Eagles started well but ended up missing out on playoff action for a second straight year.
The Eagle’s record holder for most U-21 appearances, Cameron will look to continue his unprecedented rise with Colorado’s MLS NEXT Pro team, who were MLS Next Pro Regular Season Champions back in 2023. Vancouver FC, meanwhile, seem to be acting fast on replacing him.
Josh Healey of the Wanderers Notebook reports that the Langley-based side are in talks with former Pacific FC attacking fullback Kunle Dada-Luke. The 25-year-old has 117 appearances for Pacific, joining the Tridents in 2021, but did not re-sign for the club ahead of the 2025 season. Time will tell, but it seems that Vancouver FC will get this deal over the line and have a more than able replacement on that right side of the pitch.
Cameron clocks in as the second major young talent sold in the same window, with the Eagles having sold Grady McDonnell to Club Brugge one month ago.
