After helping Dundee United clinch the Scottish Championship title and return to top flight heights, Canadian international David Wotherspoon has confirmed he will be leaving the Tangerines following the expiry of his short-term contract.

The 34-year-old arrived to Tannadice Park five months ago, going on to make nine league appearances en route to the club’s successful push for promotion. While he did miss a number of games due to a calf injury, he looked to be a good fit with the team despite limited gametime.

The veteran Canadian international was part of Canada’s 2022 World Cup squad and has spent most of his career with Scottish Premiership side St. Johnstone, where the club icon had accrued 355 appearances, 26 goals, 59 assists, and three cup wins.

After leaving the Scottish top flight side last year he went on to join second tier side Inverness Caledonian Thistle, showcasing himself well by tallying five goals and two assists in just eleven appearances. His deal there expired in January, at which point he reinforced Dundee United for a successful promotion run.

It’s unclear where the Perth, Scotland-born player will land next: while his goodbye post made it clear his time with the Tangerines had concluded, it looks like the veteran midfielder isn’t ready to hang up his boots yet.

Wotherspoon had once represented Scotland at the U-21 level, completing an allegiance switch to Canada back in 2018. He’s made thirteen appearances for Les Rouges overall, including one at the FIFA Men’s World Cup against Morocco.

While he’s had some injury concerns at this stage of his career, it remains to be seen if the Canadian Premier League might be of interest: he holds a passport by way of a Canadian mother, but it’s unclear if extending his playing career beyond Scotland is something that may interest him at this stage.
