FC Annecy Open To Goteh Ntignee Exit

It’s been nearly half a year since we reported that Canadian winger Goteh Ntignee looked set to depart Ligue 2 side FC Annecy, and a recent comment from the club’s sporting director suggests that an exit is still on the cards.

The 22-year-old has made just three first team appearances since his arrival from Canada’s top flight in 2023 and does not seem to be part of the club’s plans for the future. In fact, the club could seek out an early exit for the winger.

“For Goteh Ntignee, it could be a possibility,” Annecy Sporting Director Jean-Christophe Nallet revealed to Le Dauphine, stating that the player is under contract FC Annecy is not in a position to ask him to leave definitively, but rather that the club needs to find ‘a project that suits’, like a loan or mutual termination as long as the club is happy with the terms, too.

The Canadian-Nigerian winger had a breakthrough season in the CPL before his chapter in France, tallying two goals and three assists in eighteen appearances for Cavalry ahead of his summertime sale. At the moment, it’s unclear if a loan back to Canada’s top flight could be a possibility.

His move to southeastern France initially came in the shape of a loan with a permanent transfer triggered after Ntignee made his first start for the Ligue 2 side, which he did through the reserves in a match against Echirolles. It’s in the reserves where he’s largely remained, featuring in just three matches for the senior team since his arrival in August 2023.

Given the comments of Jean-Christophe Nallet, it sounds like the former Cavalry winger is not part of the club’s plans for the future, with the club set to either loan him out for the remainder of his deal or find terms to end their agreement prematurely.

The Ligue 2 side currently sits just four points from the top of the table and are proving strong promotion contenders for 2025.

Ntignee’s move was valued at about half a million dollars, a similar amount to what Vancouver FC could make with the sale of Grady McDonnell to Club Brugge. Back in Alberta, Cavalry has a strong reputation for selling on young talent to Europe, having moved young domestic players like Victor Loturi and Aribim Pepple to Ross County and Luton Town respectively.

While he’s already exited as a free agent, star Cavalry defender Daan Klomp – who is now staying fit in Europe – is anticipating a move to a higher level following his title-winning season with the club. He had Major League Soccer interest last year, with a ‘hefty transfer fee’ ultimately keeping him in place at ATCO Field through to last season.

For the moment, Goteh Ntignee’s future remains unclear: while he’s still with the FC Annecy reserves, his overall future certainly looks set to lie outside of the club’s boundaries.
