Official: Jose Escalante Joins FC Motagua
It’s official: Jose Escalante is donning the blue colours of FC Motagua.
The Honduran side has confirmed the transfer of Cavalry original Jose Escalante, who had looked emotional in what we had suggested would be his farewell match last weekend.
Flashback: Jose Escalante Looks Set For Cavalry Exit
The 28-year-old Honduran was a pillar product of the Canadian Premier League, where he enticed fans and foes alike with his fast-footed attacks and uncanny ability to draw fouls out of opponents.
Embracing his role as one of the league’s original ‘villains’, he was a polarizing talent in the Canadian Premier League who proved to be a source of great entertainment on the pitch.
Just as at the time of our initial report of his exit, Cavalry FC has yet to say anything regarding his exit – though FC Motagua has already made it official:
It’s unclear, for now, how this transfer took shape: Escalante was under contract with Cavalry for the remainder of 2023 with a club option for a further year, so Cavalry fans will be hoping to see the club well compensated for the loss of one of its core members.
Neither club has confirmed whether there was a transfer fee or future incentives.
FC Motagua is the fifth Honduran club of Escalante’s career, with the midfielder having previously played for Olimpia, Honduras Progreso, Juticalpa, and CDS Vita, where he went on loan from Cavalry.
The 28-year-old has long-flirted with a permanent return to his native country, having come close to signing there following the inaugural CPL season.
The move comes in the midst of his fifth season in red-and-white, where he featured in every possible match this season, culminating in his one hundredth appearance in a match against York United over the weekend.
His time in Alberta saw him contributed sixteen assists and nine goals.
Escalante will not be the only international player to secure an outbound move in the upcoming transfer window, while others like Alberto Zapater seem all but certain to come in.
This post will be updated with more details when they come from Cavalry FC.
