FC Supra Explores McInerney Signing

A former Major League Soccer stalwart could be stepping out of professional retirement to lace up with FC Supra du Quebec.

The Quebecois side is exploring the possibility of signing of former CF Montreal forward Jack McInerney, 34, who has already integrated himself with Ligue1 Quebec side CS Saint-Laurent in a bid to get match fit.

The Chattanooga, Tennessee-born attacker had retired with the Oakland Roots following the 2020 NISA season, but appears to be on the cusp of a return to professional football in Canada’s top flight.

McInerny is no stranger to Canada, having spent two seasons with CF Montreal – then known as the Impact – back in 2014-15, where he notched eleven goals in 43 league appearances and led the Canadian Championship golden boot race in 2014.

The veteran attacker has also plied his trade with the Philadelphia Union, Columbus Crew, Portland Timbers, and LA Galaxy, then moved on to the USL Championship by way of Indy Eleven and the NISA-era Oakland Roots, having also trialed with CF Montreal for a return that did not ultimately take shape in 2019.

Having left professional football behind in 2020, it was thought that McInerney’s career had come to a quiet close amidst the pandemic – until now, perhaps.

While the Canadian transfer window officially closed on August 20, free agent signings can land outside of this window as the league only freezes rosters on September 17.

With Quebec-based journalist Hans Jr Najeme reporting that the former CF Montreal player has already been training with FC Supra squad, we could be in the midst of the first signing procured by new Supra shotcaller Shady Saleh.

According to Maxime Truman, McInerney earned serious discussions from Supra after scoring a heap of goals in a recreational league, prompting club leadership to ask him about returning to the pro game.

The Quebecois side just fought Inter Toronto to a one-one draw at York Lions Stadium, with golden boot leader Loic Kwemi bagging the equalizer.
