The reigning Canadian Premier League playoff champions have secured themselves a highly-touted youngster on loan from CF Montreal.

The club has confirmed its loan of 18-year-old midfielder Matteo Schiavoni in a move we first reported on last week, although his return to CF Montreal from Italy was not finalized at that point in time.

The newest Forge recruit arrives to Tim Hortons Field after spending the last season with the youth ranks of Serie A side Bologna FC, for whom he tallied 29 appearances split between their U-18 and U-19 ranks.

He had been with CF Montreal before that, having earned training opportunities with the first team after rising from the U-14 to U-23 ranks following his arrival in 2019. This morning saw CF Montreal sign him to a guaranteed contract through 2024 with the next three years all on club options.

Schiavoni was part of the Canada U-20 men’s team that breezed through qualifying this year, with the midfielder present in the 8-0 win over Dominica and the 4-0 win over Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Born in Montreal, he got his start with Lachine SC before joining the MLS side’s academy ranks after impressing as a thirteen-year-old at the Quebec Games. He was one of the youngest faces in the Bologna ranks last season, having earned an invite there after impressing at the Viareggio Tournament in Tuscany.

While the ambitious youngster says he wants to play for a top five European league one day, first he will test himself in the pro ranks of Canada’s top flight.

Somewhat surprisingly, he becomes the first MLS-to-CPL loan of 2024. CF Montreal has been a frequent user of this developmental pathway, with last year seeing the club send both Jean-Aniel Assi and Ilias Iliadis to Canada’s top flight, with former CPL loanee Jonathan Sirois enjoying a breakout campaign last year upon his return to CF Montreal.

Forge is less than a month away from kicking off its title defense season, with head coach Bobby Smyrniotis having secured some intriguing reinforcements like former Bundesliga winger Nana Opoku Ampomah and returning Forge baller Elimane Cisse.

The club has also taken in CF Monterrey’s Daniel Parra on loan this season.
