CF Montreal Set To Loan Matteo Schiavoni To Forge FC

It looks like CF Montreal youth prospect Matteo Schiavoni will be loaned to Forge FC for the upcoming season.

The 18-year-old Canadian-Italian has spent the last year in the youth setup of Serie A side Bologna, making 29 appearances split between their U-18 and U-19 ranks prior to the new calendar year.

He left CF Montreal to join their sister club for the opportunity, but is expected to formally sign a new deal with his hometown club before the loan becomes official.

A source from the Canadian Premier League says that the paperwork and medical evaluation for the loan is still being finalized, though Matteo’s loan move is expected to progress without issue.

The right-sided midfielder first joined CF Montreal with their U-14 side in 2019, subsequently rising all the way through to the U-23 level and earning some opportunities to train with the first team, too.

Born in Montreal, he got his start with Lachine SC before joining the MLS side’s academy ranks after impressing as a thirteen-year-old at the Quebec Games.

More recently at Bologna, he has been one of the younger faces in the squad – one in which he earned an invite to after impressing at the Viareggio Tournament in Tuscany. While the ambitious youngster says he wants to play for a top five European league one day, first he will test himself in the pro ranks of Canada’s top flight.

Schiavoni was part of the Canada U-20 men’s team that breezed through qualifying this year, with the midfielder present in the 8-0 win over Dominica and the 4-0 win over Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Last season saw CF Montreal send both Jean-Aniel Assi and Ilias Iliadis to Canada’s top flight, with former CPL loanee Jonathan Sirois enjoying a breakout season back at CF Montreal.

Matteo would be the first MLS-to-CPL loan seen this year league-wide, but will be the second athlete Forge will take in on loan after CF Monterrey’s Daniel Parra.

As a loaned U-21 domestic talent, up to 1,000 minutes that Schiavoni picks up will count towards the club’s required allotment of 2,000 minutes given to Canadian youth talent throughout the upcoming season.

The news of the loan was first reported by the Sick Podcast hosted by Tony Marinaro.
