Forge Banks On Benitez, Activates Option

Orlendis Benitez will be back in Forge orange for 2025.

The former Cuban international’s second spell in Hamilton resumed late last season with the midfielder making three appearances including a late substitution in the playoffs against Atletico Ottawa.

The 27-year-old had been a standout in League1 Ontario with the Simcoe County Rovers before that, highlighting himself in a cup match against Toronto FC whilst playing a large part in the club’s L1Cup final appearance in 2024 and league championship in 2023.

Benitez had played with Forge previously, arriving on a short-term deal in 2022. He also helped the Vaughan Azzurri to a league title that year, giving credence that his talent level rises above Ontario’s semi-professional ranks.

The midfielder started a new life in Canada after defecting from Cuba whilst on international duty in 2019. Having just been called up to the national team, he made the decision to start anew alongside teammates Alejandro Portal and Andy Baquero, who both also had stints in the CPL.

Forge describes the Cuban international as a dynamic attacking talent, and his technical prowess on the ball has been clear – though he hasn’t carved big pro minutes in Canada’s top flight just yet.

Evidently, Forge sees potential in what Benitez brings to the table. The club has been plenty of its its options taken for 2025, with goalkeepers Christopher Kalongo and Jassem Koleilat recently announced as returning, amongst others.
