Forge Re-Signs Trio Of Sigma Grads, But Rama’s Out

Reigning Canadian Premier League champions Forge FC has activated its club options on three fringe players, while sturdy full-back Rezart Rama has left for Albania.

Remaining at Tim Hortons Field will be third-year Forge youngster Sebastian Costello, secondary goalkeeper Christopher Kalongo, and 24-year-old utility player Malcolm Duncan, all of whom came through Sigma FC before turning professional with Forge.

The youngest of the bunch to have his option triggered is midfielder Sebastian Castello, who missed almost all of the 2023 CPL season through injury but has made 15 appearances since signing in 2021 – where he scored the club’s 100th goal with his first touch after being substitute on.

The 20-year-old had signed a development contract in 2020 and was formally signed at the age of 17 the following year, with head coach Bobby Smyrniotis keen to see what the youngster can do after bouncing back from a tough long-term injury.

Goalkeeper Christopher Kalongo will be back four a fourth season in the hammer, though he’ll be biding his time behind Triston Henry: over the last two seasons the 22-year-old has been given just two appearances

The Sigma FC graduate had initially signed on a development deal three years ago before turning fully professional with the side during its title-winning 2022 campaign, with last season seeing him notch one sole appearance against Vancouver FC and lay claim to his first professional clean sheet.

Defender Malcom Duncan will be back for a third season Forge after having made ten appearances last season, though he found himself sidelined near the end of the title-winning campaign following a nasty collision with Pacific’s Kunle Dada-Luke.

The Toronto native – another product of Sigma FC – is a bit of a utility player for Forge, featuring on the middle and right flank of the defensive line, and further up the wing as well.

The return of the trio brings the Forge roster up to seventeen players, but it turns out that Manjrekar James won’t be the only big departure on the defensive end.

While there was a mention that Rezart Rama was in negotiations with Forge FC just yesterday, the physical full-back has now signed on a two-and-a-half-year deal with Albanian top flight side KF Egnatia, who rest top of their domestic league table.

The Greek-Albian right-back had been a revelation with Forge FC, winning back-to-back league titles since arriving from Nottingham Forest’s U-23 side in 2022.

He now departs with 54 Forge appearances to his name, having solidified himself as a top CPL full-back capable of both bursting runs and, of course, a strong physical present that proved potent at Tim Hortons Field.

Rama was the bulldog on the squad. Tough, fast, take no prisoners. He’ll be tough to replace for the physical side of the game. Wish him well.
