When Forge FC announced the signing of Bundesliga winger Nana Opoku Ampomah back in February, few would have expected a 132 day wait before the Ghanian international would finally arrive to Tim Hortons Field.

With his work permit delays now behind him, the 28-year-old will be keen to get into action with the reigning Canadian Premier League champions, who also dispatched CF Montreal to remain in contention for the Canadian Championship.

Forge’s newest arrival spent the last three seasons with German club Fortuna Dusseldorf, where he tallied 18 first team appearances – including 12 in the country’s top flight – while also featuring for Dusseldorf’s reserves.

In 2021, the club loaned him to Belgian side Royal Antwerp, where Ampomah was a regular through 24 appearances, seven of which came in the Europa League. However, he views his time on Antwerp with regret, having been unable to establish himself back in Germany afterwards.

Having represented Ghana no less than four times, Ampomah is a winger of high pedigree for the Canadian Premier League, joining a club that has a strong track record for its international selections – Daniel Parra is turning heads this year, while players like Beni Badibanga and Rezart Rama (who transferred out this year) proved to be astute pickups, too.

Ampomah’s career began in his native country through FC Brabo Bravo before he left for Belgian side KV Mechelen’s U-21 team. He stepped into the professional level well Waasland-Beveren, tallying 88 appearances, 19 goals, and 11 assists.

Elimane Cisse Senegal

The club is still waiting for the return of two-time CPL champion Elimane Cisse, who’s visa delays appear to stem from the fact that the Senegalese international is bringing his family with him to Canada. He was a member of Forge’s squad through its first three seasons, tallying 74 appearances in that time.

Forge has not disclosed the length or structure of Ampomah’s multi-year deal.

The team travel out east to face the Halifax Wanderers on Saturday, but will be back home a week after that to host a Valour FC side which put up a good fight at Tim Hortons Field last time around.
