Former Wanderer Gabriel Escobar Loses House To Fire
Former Halifax Wanderers defender Gabriel Escobar is safe, but his family home and the property within it were not so lucky.
The El Salvadoran-Canadian dual national was home with his sister when the fire broke out, but now find themselves displaced following the disaster.
Escobar will be a familiar name to Halifax Wanderers fans, with the defender having signed on midway through the 2022 CPL season after helping the TSS Rovers win the inaugural League1 BC championship. The left-back hit the ground running with five straight appearances before suffering a season-ending foot injury against York United.
While the Wanderers had a club option for the following season, the 23-year-old was passed by and returned to TSS Rovers, where he featured in the Canadian Championship against Pacific FC.
Escobar had plied his youth trade with the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy while also featuring for Canada at the U-15 to U-17 levels, finishing as a runner-up for the Best Canadian U-17 award behind Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David. He would later transition to the El Salvador U-20 team for the 2018 Concacaf U-20 Championship, but never earned a senior call up with either side.
Described as a defender with tremendous character both on the pitch and off, it’s tragic to see the 23-year-old lose his family home – though thankfully, Gabriel and his family are safe and uninjured following the fire.
A GoFundMe for the Escobar family aims to raise $30,000 to help the family land on their feet following the fire.
