Galway United Banks On CPL Attack With Shaw Signing

Top flight Irish side Galway United is adding a third former Canadian Premier League player to the mix.

Former Cavalry and Atletico Ottawa striker Malcolm Shaw has joined the club as a mid-season addition, arriving as a title-winner from Canada’s top flight.

Galway United is hoping to turn its fortunes around after a fairly dismal run of results in May that saw them rack up four straight losses, though the Maroon Army have since claimed four points from their last two games.

The 29-year-old arrives following an interim spell of free agency after hoisting the North Star Cup with Cavalry last season, for whom Shaw tallied two goals in 26 appearances. He spent four seasons in the nation’s capital with Atletico Ottawa prior to that, racking up 19 goals and five assists, with Ottleti reaching the CPL Final in 2023.

Flashback: ‘The Goals And Success Will Come’, Says Shaw

“I believe I can score goals. I can be versatile across the front three, but most of all, I work hard and want to help win games,” says Shaw, who could soon find himself pairing up with former CPL striker Moses Dyer. Shaw’s new teammate has been a hit in Ireland, racking up eight goals in just seventeen appearances following a successful tenure in the CPL.

The duo aren’t the only former CPL athletes at Galway, with former Eddies full-back Jeannot Esua currently in the squad, too.

The Pickering, Ontario-born striker’s time in Canada’s top flight saw him earn an entry to the Trinidad and Tobago national team, making his debut at the 2023 Gold Cup and racking up three goals from eight appearances.

Shaw wasn’t part of the Trinidad and Tobago setup that bested Cuba in Gold Cup qualification this March, with the former free agent hoping his move to Ireland’s top flight helps put him back in national team contention.

Shaw has plied his trade in Europe before, having once suited up for Swedish lower division sides Assyriska IK and Raslatts SK before he landed in Canada’s top flight.
