Rising Son: Alessandro Biello Loaned To Halifax Wanderers

The Halifax Wanderers just announced the season-long loan of CF Montreal midfield prospect Alessandro Biello.

The 18-year-old midfielder signed a first team deal with CF Montreal just last year, making four off-the-bench appearances for the CF Montreal first team. These included two against Forge FC in the Canadian Championship quarter-finals, along with MLS matches against the Columbus Crew and Toronto FC.

“We believe that this step in his career will be beneficial to his progression,” says CF Montreal President Gabriel Gervais. “This move is in line with our development philosophy, which aims to offer our young players the best opportunities.”

The midfielder, who is the son of men’s national team assistant coach Mauro Biello, has been part of the CF Montreal pipeline since joining the the U-8 pre-academy squad in 2014 and the U-15 Academy in 2019. He would captain the U-17 side before carving his way up to the reserve side playing in League1 Quebec, for whom he would tally nine appearances.

Biello won’t be the only son of a high-profile Canada Soccer coach in the country’s top flight, with former men’s national team coach John Herdman’s son Jay Herdman having signed on with Cavalry following a successful loan spell.

Wanderers Sporting Director Matt Fegan describes Biello as one of the top up-and-coming talents in the country, with head coach Patrice Gheisar adding that the side is going to challenge him to be a chance creator and get forward to aid the coach’s numbers-up attacking philosophy.

Patrice has already had a close eye on the midfielder, having assisted with a men’s national team camp in which Biello was inviting to as a training player.

The youngster also made six appearances for Canada at the U-20 level, featuring for the side at the 2024 Concacaf U-20 Championship and scoring in the qualifiers against St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Halifax Wanderers confirmed that there is no recall clause in his loan terms, so the midfielder will remain with Halifax for the duration of the 2025 CPL season.

The Wanderers’ season will kick off in less than a month’s time, travelling to the nation’s capital to face Atletico Ottawa on April 5.
