There have been longstanding reports that Italian midfielder Giorgio Probo was set for the Halifax Wanderers, with the club making the move official this holiday Monday.

The 24-year-old midfielder arrives to Wanderers Grounds after going unselected in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, with the Creighton University standout turning down several MLS NEXT Pro offers to sign a two-year deal with Halifax instead.

His last two seasons with the Creighton Bluejays saw him tally an incredible twenty-two assists and five goals to boot, playing alongside Callum Watson in 2022 and landing the BIG EAST midfielder of the year award in 2023.

He’s also suited up for Iowa Western University and, back in his native Italy, accrued some seventy appearances in Italy’s fourth division for the likes of Atalanta U-17, Virtus Bergamo, and Borgosesia before moving to the US to pursue his post-secondary education.

Head coach Patrice Gheisar describes him as a classic midfielder is equally skilled between an attacking midfielder or holding midfielder role. allowing him to add a versatile presence both on and off the ball.

“We have many skilled players who can break lines on the dribble, but he can deliver line-breaking passes. He has a deep passing range, is effective on free kicks and has a high-level background in the sport,” says Gheisar.

The Halifax boss Halifax by storm last season, instilling a foot-forward attacking mentality that was bought in from the players. Following a slow start as the team adjusted, the east coast side flourished as the season progressed and cracked a playoff spot to cap off Gheisar’s first year coaching at the pro level.

He’s a gaffer that wants to see his team flow well together, and that’s exactly the type of football the club’s new Italian likes to play.

“I like to keep it simple on the field, play one or two touches. I want to make other players better… maybe you don’t notice me a lot during the game, but I make the game easy for my teammates and try to make the whole team play better,” he says, adding that the head coach’s early contact with him had been a crucial element in his decision to sign out east.

The Halifax Wanderers now have 19 players under contract ahead of the 2024 CPL season, with Probo being the sixth international behind club original Andre Rampersad, midfield talisman Lorenzo Callegari, and new additions Ryan Telfer, Vitor Dias, and veteran striker Christian Volesky.
