Patrice Gheisar is adding Vaughan Azzurri forward Remi Agunbiade to his Halifax Wanderers squad on a development contract.

That means the 18-year-old can make up to three appearances for the Canadian Premier League side while retaining his amateur status.

Identified as a strong prospect for the future, Agunbiade made his League1 Ontario debut for the Vaughan Azzurri last year, having also tallied 14 goals for their U-19 setup.

The move comes after the youngster has already committed soccer powerhouse University of Akron for the fall, so the expectation is – barring a professional contract later on – that Remi will return to his studies before the 2024 CPL season wraps.

“Remi is a young man with high potential that soaks in information, so he will continue to improve while being in our group,” said head coach Patrice Gheisar on the youngster. “He’s athletic with technical ability and going to a great school that has turned numerous attackers into MLS draft picks.”

Last season saw Patrice bring in Kimani Stewart-Baynes on a development contract, with the youngster later going on to sign with the Colorado Rapids. The 2023 CPL season also saw Camilo Vasconcelos, Yorgos Gavas, and Ethan Schilte-Brown on developmental deals.

“We are continuing our commitment to invest in young Canadian talent with the addition of Remi to our squad,” adds sporting director Matt Fegan. “He is a young man with a lot of promise and can challenge for first team minutes already as we help him in his ongoing development.”

Patrice made waves when he arrived from Vaughan Soccer Club himself last year, bringing a handful of players and his assistant coach from the League1 Ontario side. Establishing a firm attacking identity, he guided the team to playoffs and has only grown his expectations for year two.

The Wanderers are going coast-to-coast for preseason and will wrap things up out west ahead of their season opener against Pacific FC.
